BELGRADE, July 21 (Xinhua/GNA) – Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, has said he planned to resign and seek a voter mandate to become prime minister.
Vucic told local media during a visit on Monday to a regional dual education training center in Svilajnac, central Serbia, that the government would first resign, after which he would call early parliamentary elections. He said he would continue to perform his presidential duties for up to two weeks before stepping down, and then join the election campaign for the post of prime minister.
Vucic said he would rather seek a voter mandate for the post of prime minister, although the law allows him to become prime minister without a parliamentary election if he can secure the support of a majority in the National Assembly.
The ruling coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), currently holds a majority in the National Assembly.
Vucic said in June that he planned to resign as president, and a presidential election could be held within the next three to four months.
Vucic was elected president in April 2017, and re-elected in April 2022. Under Serbia’s Constitution, the president serves a five-year term, and may be re-elected once.
