Sekondi (W/R), Oct. 01, GNA – The Karpowership Ghana Company Limited (Ltd), an Independent Power Producer (IPP), has expressed optimism about its power generation contract being extended by the government after expiry in August 2027.
Ms Sandra Amarquaye, the Corporate Communications Manager of Karpowership Ghana, said this when Mr Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, paid a working visit to the company’s facility in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, to familiarise himself with its operations and contribution to Ghana’s power sector.
The company, which generates about 450 megawatts of electricity for the national grid, is engaging the government for an extension of its power generation contract beyond the expiry timeline of August 2027.
Ms Amarquaye said “Our licence will expire in August 2027. We are currently in negotiations with the government, and we are optimistic that it will turn out well because things are looking positive.”
She stated that the company was committed to providing reliable and efficient power to the national grid, noting that Karpowership’s 450-megawatt contribution remained significant to Ghana’s electricity supply, and expressed confidence in the ongoing discussions with the government.
The Western Regional Minister said Ghana’s growing electricity demand made the continued availability of reliable power generation capacity very crucial.

Mr Nelson mentioned that Ghana had not yet met its growing electricity needs, particularly with the government’s 24-Hour Economy expected to increase demand from industry, and that while the Ministry of Energy would ultimately determine whether Karpowership’s contract should be extended, the company’s contribution should be considered in the decision.
He said the country could not afford to overlook any viable source of power generation while demand continued to rise; saying: “To the extent that we still need power, then I believe that it will be worthy to consider them for extension.”
He commended the company for its corporate social responsibility initiatives in the Western Region, particularly in, education and environmental interventions, and asked them to continue contributing to the development of the region.
