Accra, July 22, GNA – The University of Ghana School of Law has emerged overall champion at the Supreme Court @150 Moot Court Grand Finale held in Accra.
The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) School of Law and University of Cape Coast Faculty of Law placed second and third respectively, while Pentecost University was adjudged best private law university.
Justice Richard Adjei‑Frimpong, a Supreme Court Judge, speaking at the opening of the finale, said the students had demonstrated sound arguments and logical legal reasoning.
He noted that the essence of the exercise was to build confidence in public speaking, strengthen coherent argumentation and develop capacity to respond to rigorous judicial questioning.
Justice Adjei‑Frimpong commended participating universities, lecturers and coaches for their support, adding that although only two institutions reached the grand finale, the rest performed extraordinarily well.
He recommended to the Chief Justice that the competition be made a regular feature of judicial activities.
“We owe it to the younger ones to build future lawyers and judges who would demonstrate zeal and professionalism in their work,” he said.
Dr Ernest Owusu‑Dapaah, Justice of the Court of Appeal, said the competition sought to nurture the next generation of constitutional advocates and judicial officers.
He explained that the exercise exposed students to the disciplines and traditions of constitutional and litigation advocacy before Ghana’s apex court.
Dr Owusu‑Dapaah said twelve schools registered but eleven participated, with teams prepared to argue as plaintiff and defendant.
Oral advocacy was assessed by seven judges, and finalists earned their positions through rigorous advocacy tests.
“The competition simulates the Supreme Court of Ghana and urges various counsels in the case to comport themselves,” he said.
The Moot Court was presided over by Justice Agnes Dordzie, a retired Supreme Court Judge.
In all, 11 universities took part in the two‑day competition.
The University of Ghana School of Law received a trophy, medals, law books, a plaque, certificates and cash prize of GHC10,000.
Other awardees were presented with plaques, certificates, medals and cash prizes by the Chief Justice and justices of the superior courts.
