Accra, July 13, GNA – The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), has provided healthcare services to residents affected by recent flooding in parts of the municipality.
The exercise, carried out though its health directorate, covered the Bush Road, Penny and Tafo communities, where flood victims received medical attention and basic healthcare services.
Leading the exercise, Madam Gifty Ofori Ansah, Municipal Director of Health Services, said the initiative formed part of the Assembly’s efforts to prevent disease outbreaks and address the immediate health needs of residents following the floods.
She supervised healthcare personnel deployed to the affected communities and underscored the importance of early medical intervention in preventing post-flood health complications.
The health team also educated residents on personal hygiene, environmental sanitation and other preventive measures to reduce the risk of waterborne and vector-borne diseases commonly associated with flooding.
Affected residents had their vital signs, including blood pressure, checked, while those living with chronic conditions were provided with medications to help manage their illnesses.
Madam Ofori Ansah urged residents to maintain good hygiene practices and promptly report any signs of illness to the nearest health facility.
The outreach was undertaken with support from the Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Teshie, which provided a bus to transport nurses to their assigned locations to facilitate the exercise.
The Municipal Health Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of residents through timely public health interventions.
Heavy rains in Accra in early June caused widespread flooding in several low-lying communities, displacing families and damaging property.
The floods, worsened by choked drains and overflowing gutters, left many residents exposed to stagnant water and unsanitary conditions.
Health officials have warned that such conditions increase the risk of cholera, malaria, typhoid and other waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
