Israeli police: Soldier feared abducted in West Bank was with partner

Tel Aviv, July 9 (dpa/GNA) – Israeli police reported on Thursday, that they followed the car of a Palestinian man, carrying a female Israeli soldier into the West Bank, fearing an abduction, only to find that the two were a couple.

Police stopped the car in the vicinity of an Israeli settlement, when their mistake became clear. The couple were taken to a nearby police station, the Times of Israel reported.

The newspaper said romantic relationships between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians are not against the law, but the Israeli military does not permit them.

Soldiers have in the past been punished for breaking the rule. Israeli troops regularly carry out missions in the West Bank.

Tensions have risen in the region since the October 7, 2023 attacks and the ensuing Gaza war, with both Palestinians and Israeli settlers carrying out acts of violence.
