July 12 – (Adnkronos/GNA) – Germany recorded the highest number of drowning deaths in this month since June 2003, the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) announced today.
At least 99 people drowned last June: the last time more drowning deaths were recorded in June was during the 2003 heat wave, when 107 people died this way.
“The tragic start to the bathing season raises fears that further heatwaves in midsummer could once again claim many victims in the water,” declared DLRG President Ute Vogt.
The DLRG is the world’s largest water rescue organization, with nearly 630,000 members. As the summer holidays begin in several German states, lifeguards are urging the public not to underestimate the dangers of the water.(continued)
