Chereponi District constructs boreholes, rehabilitates dam to improve water access

By Albert Futukpor

Wenchiki (N/E Region), July 13, GNA – The Chereponi District Assembly has constructed three mechanised boreholes for the Wenchiki, Danado and Hilltop communities to improve access to safe and reliable water for households in the area.

The Assembly has also rehabilitated the Wenchiki Dam to ensure that farmers and livestock owners have reliable water for their farming and livestock activities.

The intervention is aimed at addressing longstanding water challenges in the district and improving water availability for domestic, agricultural, and livestock use.

The projects were undertaken by the Chereponi District Assembly with support from the Coastal States Stability Mechanism (CSSM), a multi-donor initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Mr Ibrahim Tia, North East Regional Minister, speaking at the inauguration of the projects at Wenchiki, commended the Chereponi District Assembly for implementing the intervention, saying it would bring relief to the beneficiary communities.

He urged the beneficiary communities to take ownership of the facilities and maintain them to ensure their sustainability and continued service.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives of the CSSM, traditional authorities, community leaders, members of the Water Management Committees in the beneficiary communities, and other stakeholders.

Mr Amadu Kofi Sheini, Chereponi District Chief Executive, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to improving access to essential services in line with its development priorities.

He said: “Water is fundamental to the health, livelihoods and wellbeing of our people. This investment will improve access to safe water for households, farmers, and livestock owners while supporting peaceful coexistence and community development.”

Mr Sheini said residents of Wenchiki, Danado and Hilltop had for many years faced difficulties accessing reliable water sources, particularly during the dry season.

He expressed optimism that the new facilities would improve water security, reduce barriers to equitable access to water services, and support livelihoods, wellbeing and local economic activities in the beneficiary communities.

“The projects form part of the Chereponi District Assembly’s broader efforts to improve basic service delivery, promote sustainable development and strengthen the effective management of shared community resources,” he added.

Alhaji Abubakari Awuffour, Paramount Chief of Wenchiki, expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying the community had struggled with inadequate water supply for many years.

“We have been crying for water for years and we are happy with this project that has given us water. We have been able to do this because of the relative peace in the area,” he said.

He assured the Assembly and its partners that the community would ensure the responsible use and maintenance of both the rehabilitated dam and the boreholes to enable them to serve the people for many years.

The Coastal States Stability Mechanism is implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and partners with governments and communities to reinforce locally accepted state presence in areas vulnerable to instability.

Through a flexible small-grants mechanism, the CSSM supports efforts to strengthen civilian security, improve access to basic services, and enhance social and economic conditions.
