Banda-Ahenkro (Bono), June 5, GNA – The Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghanaians to contribute meaningfully towards accelerated national development.

She said that every citizen had a role to play in advancing progressive development, regardless of the work they do, as every effort made contributed to the nation’s development.

The Vice President acknowledged that: “Whether it’s business, farming, fishing, teaching, healthcare or any other profession, every citizen’s contribution drives accelerated growth and development.”

Vice President Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made the call at the commemoration of the 47th Anniversary of the June 4 uprising at Banda-Ahenkro in the Bono Region.

The colourful event was on the theme: “Strengthening state institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 uprising.”

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang noted that although Ghana had made significant progress in her development process since the revolution, “the nation still has much further to go”.

She said national development was not measured merely by the passage of time but measured by the quality of lives of the people.

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the thriving democracy required State institutions to perform their duties effectively and independently without fear or favour.

“Democracy is built by democratic and fair-minded citizens and not democracy that creates democratic and fair-minded people,” he stated.

He expressed concern that some institutions were not operating at their full capacity because of undue interferences, saying that stronger institutions would enhance democratic governance and national development.
