Dzodze (V/R), June 18, GNA – Two people have died, several properties have been destroyed and vast hectares of farmland submerged following severe flooding that has affected communities in the Ketu North Municipality.

Mr Eric Edem Agbana, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu North, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday after he and the Rev Martin Amenaki, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), toured affected communities over the past two days to assess the extent of the damage and interact with residents.

“It is with deep sadness that I confirm the loss of two lives. Several properties have been destroyed, and many hectares of farmland have been completely submerged,” the MP stated.

He said the floods had washed crops in several communities, posing a serious threat to food security and the livelihoods of hundreds of farmers across the municipality.

Mr Agbana noted that emergency response efforts were underway in collaboration with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to provide immediate assistance to affected residents.

“We are working closely with all relevant agencies and stakeholders to bring the situation under control and provide the necessary support to affected residents,” he said.

The MP expressed appreciation to the Volta Regional Minister and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for their swift intervention and support during the difficult period.

“We are particularly grateful to the Volta Regional Minister and NADMO for their prompt response and support to affected communities,” he added.

Officials of the NADMO have begun assessing the extent of the damage and distributing initial relief items to displaced families.

Mr Agbana said a comprehensive statement detailing the full extent of the destruction and additional interventions would be released after consultations with technical teams.

He appealed to residents in flood-prone communities to relocate to higher grounds and cooperate with the NADMO and the Municipal Assembly officials as the rains continued to fall in parts of the Volta Region.

The flooding has heightened concerns about the vulnerability of communities in Ketu North to extreme weather events and renewed calls for long-term flood mitigation measures to protect lives, properties and agricultural livelihoods.
