Accra, June 24, GNA – Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz hailed his players’ discipline and fighting spirit after holding England to a goalless draw in a fiercely contested World Cup Group L clash at the Boston Stadium on Tuesday.
Queiroz said Ghana executed their strategy effectively in the first half to frustrate the Three Lions of England, limiting their attacking options despite England’s dominance in possession.
“That was a tough game, no doubt… The first 45 minutes was England playing their football. We put in place our strategic plan. It was to block them and frustrate them since the first minute until the end of the first half, which we did,” he said.
The Portuguese tactician noted that his side successfully nullified England’s key strengths, including set pieces, wing play and penetrating runs.
“I found and I realised that the English team was completely frustrated with no solutions. The usual solutions that they use to capitalise wins, we blocked them and we succeeded in all fronts,” he added.
Queiroz emphasised that his team’s performance underlined the importance of resilience and mentality over mere technical superiority.
“They’ve been better than us in terms of football. We’ve been better than them in fighting spirit and determination,” he stated.
The Ghana coach said his side improved in the second half, asserting more control and creating scoring opportunities, though both teams settled for a point.
“At the end, we deserve the draw. It was a fair result for both teams. Now we have four points and must keep pushing for qualification,” he said.
The Black Stars would face Croatia in their last Group L match scheduled for the Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday.
