Pastors urged to avoid negative attitudes, strengthen spiritual discipline

Accra, June 21, GNA – The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has admonished pastors to eschew negative attitudes that can undermine their credibility and adversely affect their congregations.

He said traits such as grumbling and over-anxiety were inconsistent with their faith in God and could be detrimental to their peace of mind, urging ministers to make conscious and sustained efforts to avoid them.

Rev. Wengam gave the advice during his third Apostolic Visitation of the Central Region B branch of the church at Assin Atonsu. The programme brought together pastors and their spouses, retired ministers and their spouses, as well as widows of pastors.

He charged pastors to invest in spiritual discipline through long hours of prayer, intensive personal Bible study and meditation, noting that such deliberate practices would insulate them from pessimism and keep them firmly on the path of serving God and humanity.

As part of the visit, Rev. Wengam led an intensive three-and-a-half-hour prayer session, focusing on thanksgiving, repentance, rededication, individual concerns and the nation. Special intercessory prayers were also offered for the upcoming General Council meeting of the Church in August and the World Congress of Assemblies of God to be hosted in Accra in October this year.

The General Superintendent also led pastors and their spouses to renew their marriage vows, reiterating that the church’s position on divorce remained unchanged.

He emphasised that Assemblies of God does not permit divorce and remarriage, and urged pastors to make their marriages exemplary for their congregants.

The National President of the Ministers’ Wives Association, Lady Mrs. Monica Wengam, called on clergy and their spouses to serve selflessly and pursue Christlike humility in their ministry.

She presented gifts to pastors and donated pieces of cloth and cash to widows of pastors and wives of retired ministers, while retired pastors also received cash and other items.
The donations, sponsored by the General Superintendent and his wife, were aimed at supporting vulnerable members and encouraging pastors serving in rural and economically challenged areas.

Rev. Anthony Efinu, Regional Superintendent of Central Region B Assemblies of God, described the apostolic visitation as a “game changer” and critical for the revival and transformation of the church.

The Central Regional Council also presented its highest honour, the Royal Servant Leadership Award, to Rev. and Mrs. Wengam in recognition of their compassionate and visionary leadership.
