Accra, June 18, GNA – The New Horizon Special School, a pioneering institution dedicated to children and adults with special needs, will hold its annual Open House Week from Monday, June 22 to Friday, June 26, 2026, at its premises opposite the Togo Embassy at Cantonments Circle, Osu.
The programme will run daily from 0900 hours to 1400 hours. The initiative opens the school’s doors to the public, offering guided tours each hour.
A statement from the school signed by Dr. George Francois, the Interim Executive Director, and copied to the Ghana News Agency said visitors will have the opportunity to observe specialised academic and vocational training programmes, meet dedicated teachers and therapists and receive counselling from the school’s experienced team.
Founded in 1972 by the late Mrs. Salome Francois, the New Horizon Special School provides day school academic education for children aged from five to 18 years with clinically diagnosed intellectual disabilities, including autism, Down’s Syndrome and cerebral palsy
Students, 18 years and above, transition into the Vocational Workshop Programme, where they are trained in Beading, Basketry, Kente Weaving, Sewing, Doormat Weaving, and Batik Tie & Dye, equipping them with skills for employment and independence.
The school’s facilities include sheltered workshops, a life skills room, physiotherapy and sensory rooms, a quiet room, a playground, a sports field, and a natural outdoor amphitheater, all designed to foster holistic development.
The statement said beyond academics, the institution has long championed community engagement to combat stigma and promote inclusion
Signature events such as the Fun Day Games in February, the Art and Crafts Exhibition in November, and the Christmas Pageant in December highlight the talents and resilience of special individuals.
The Open House Week continues this tradition, serving as a platform to raise awareness and build stronger ties between the school and the wider community.
The statement encouraged the public to take part in the programme. It said, “Whether visitors wish to drop by for a quick 20-minute walkthrough or spend the day learning more about our curriculum, Open House Week is an opportunity to experience the dignity, creativity, and potential of our students.”
The New Horizon Special School says it remains committed to its mission of providing individualized academic, therapeutic, and vocational support, while fostering positive images of persons with disabilities to build a more inclusive Ghana.
