Monday floods: Stay where you are until conditions improve — Interior Ministry

Accra, June 29, GNA – The Ministry of the Interior has advised the public to exercise extreme caution following the heavy rains and flooding several parts of the country on Monday morning.

It also advised residents to remain where they are until conditions improve.

A statement signed by Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, said, “Those who are safely at home are urged to stay at home, while those who are at their workplaces or other safe locations should remain there until it is safe to travel. Unnecessary movement should be avoided.”

The statement said, motorists and pedestrians “are strongly advised not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges, or waterways, as floodwaters can rise rapidly and pose significant danger to life and property.”

It also urged residents in flood-prone communities to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response service.

The Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other emergency response services have been deployed to monitor the situation, assist affected persons, manage traffic, and undertake rescue operations where required.

Meanwhile, the Ministry urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with the directives of security and emergency personnel, and rely only on official channels for information and updates.

It urged persons in need of emergency assistance or wishing to report persons in distress are encouraged to contact the following emergency services:

* Ghana Police Service: 18555 or 112
* Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS): 192
* National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO): 112
