Accra, June 30, GNA – The Methodist Church Ghana has called on its Ministers to mobilise material and physical support for persons affected by the recent floods in parts of Accra.

The Church also urged Ministers to open church facilities to accommodate displaced victims where necessary.

The Most Reverend Professor Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, made the call in a message expressing concern over the impact of the heavy rains that caused flooding in parts of the capital on Monday.

He encouraged Ministers of the Church to provide whatever assistance they could mobilise for affected persons and communities.

“Our Ministers are encouraged to provide whatever material and physical support they can mobilize for those needing help including, where needed, opening up church facilities to house those needing temporary accommodation,” he said.

The Presiding Bishop extended the Church’s thoughts and prayers to all those affected by the floods, describing the situation as distressing.

He prayed for the swift rescue of persons trapped by the floods and comfort for those who had lost their valuables.

“I pray that help will come quickly for those trapped in various locations and those who have lost valuables,” he added.

The appeal comes as emergency response agencies and volunteers continue efforts to assist residents in flood-hit communities following the heavy downpour that inundated several parts of Accra.

Regional Minister directs MMDCEs to intensify flood rescue operations

Accra, June 29, GNA – Mrs Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to intensify rescue operations in response to widespread flooding across the region.

The Minister instructed the MMDCEs to move into their respective communities with emergency response teams to evacuate residents trapped by floodwaters where necessary, assess conditions on the ground and provide immediate relief to affected households.

A statement signed by Mrs Ocloo and issued to the Ghana News Agency said the directive formed part of coordinated efforts to protect lives and support affected communities.

“Every MMDCE is expected to remain fully engaged until the situation is brought under control. This is a time for decisive leadership and swift action,” the statement said.

Mrs Ocloo expressed sympathy to residents affected by the floods and assured them that Government and emergency agencies were working to provide assistance.

“My heart goes out to all individuals and families who have been affected by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely sympathise with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships, and I want to assure every affected resident that you are not alone. We stand with you during this difficult period,” she said.

The Minister said the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council was collaborating with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency agencies to coordinate rescue operations and safeguard lives and property.

She urged residents to remain vigilant as the Ghana Meteorological Agency had forecast further rainfall across parts of the region.

“Where possible, remain indoors and keep away from flood-prone areas, drains and fast-flowing floodwaters,” she advised.

Mrs Ocloo appealed to parents and guardians to monitor their children closely and prevent them from playing in floodwaters or attempting to cross flooded roads and drains.

The statement advised residents requiring emergency assistance to contact NADMO through its emergency lines or WhatsApp platform, cooperate fully with emergency responders and adhere to all official safety directives.

“To everyone affected by this disaster, I assure you that I stand with you. Together with our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and our emergency response agencies, we will continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and assist those in need and support our communities through this challenging period,” she said.
