Accra, June 30, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister of Finance to release GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to support urgent flood relief and mitigation measures.
The directive follows hours of heavy rainfall that flooded parts of Accra and other communities in the southern sector.
A statement issued by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister in charge of Government Communications, said GHS 150 million of the amount will be used for immediate relief efforts for affected persons and communities, while another GHS 150 million will finance flood mitigation measures to reduce future incidents.
The President has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and Police Service to assist the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations across the city.
President Mahama yesterday undertook an aerial inspection of the flooded areas to assess the extent of damage and announced measures to safeguard residents and prevent further flooding.
