Kumasi, June 9, GNA – The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) has suspended the industrial action embarked upon by its members following what it described as fruitful engagements with key stakeholders and the intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

A statement issued by KADA and signed by its Chairman, Dr. Michael Leat, said the suspension took effect from 1800 hours on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

The Association said the decision followed timely interventions by the Asantehene, the Hospital Board, Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), and other stakeholders, who had demonstrated commitment towards addressing concerns that triggered the strike action.

The doctors had earlier laid down their tools over the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Aidoo, a development that raised concerns about the potential impact on healthcare delivery at the country’s second-largest referral facility.

According to the statement, KADA remained committed to ensuring that the issues that necessitated the industrial action were fully resolved but had carefully weighed the consequences of a prolonged strike on patient care and public health.

“The safety and well-being of patients and the broader public interest remain central to our responsibilities, and these have informed our decision to suspend the action and continue the dialogue,” the statement said.

The Association expressed profound gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, Management, and other stakeholders for facilitating dialogue and helping to chart a path towards an amicable resolution of the outstanding issues.

KADA also acknowledged the support and intervention of the National Executive Council and members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) throughout the impasse.

The statement commended several professional groups and unions within the health sector- the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Emergency Medicine Society of Ghana (EMSOG), Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG), and the Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU).

The rest were Komfo Anokye Certified Registered Anaesthetists Association (KACRA), Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS-KATH Chapter), and the Komfo Anokye Pharmacists Association (KAPA), for their solidarity during the industrial action.

KADA expressed appreciation to doctors and other health workers for their support and reiterated its commitment to continued engagement aimed at resolving the outstanding concerns.

The suspension of the strike is expected to restore full medical services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which serves as a major referral centre for the middle and northern belts of Ghana.
