Ho residents celebrate Black Stars’ gritty draw against England

Ho, June 24, GNA – Residents of Ho Fiave erupted in jubilation after Ghana held England to a goalless draw in their second Group L match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result many football enthusiasts described as a “victory in spirit” against one of the tournament favourites.

Across the municipality, football fans gathered in small groups after the match, engaging in passionate discussions, analysing tactics, praising standout performers, and pointing out areas for improvement.

The Black Stars delivered a disciplined defensive performance to frustrate England throughout the 90 minutes, denying the European side despite its dominance in possession and sustained attacking pressure. England controlled large portions of the game but failed to break Ghana’s resilient backline as the match ended 0-0.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Kojo Akakpovi, a football enthusiast, said the result had brought joy to many Ghanaians.

“We are happy. England dominated possession, but our players remained focused and disciplined. The defenders and goalkeeper did an excellent job to keep a clean sheet. This is the kind of fighting spirit we want to see from the Black Stars,” he said.

In a mix of humour and historical reflection, some supporters described England as Ghana’s “former colonial masters” and said the draw symbolised a measure of football redemption.

Others praised the performance of Ghana’s goalkeeper and defenders, whose efforts repeatedly denied England’s attackers. Ghana’s defence, led by Thomas Partey, Jerome Opoku, and Jonas Adjetey, received widespread commendation for its organisation and resilience.

Mr Akakpovi expressed optimism about Ghana’s chances of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

“If the team maintains this level of discipline, improves its attacking play, and takes its chances in the next game, Ghana can win the third match and qualify comfortably for the knockout stage,” he added.

Mr Raymond Kojo Tsiagbe, a sports presenter, said he had predicted a draw ahead of the match, despite doubts from many football fans.

“People thought England would easily beat Ghana because of the quality of players they have, but football is played on the pitch and not on paper. Ghana executed its game plan very well,” he noted.

Some supporters also commended Coach Carlos Queiroz for adopting a cautious but effective tactical strategy against a stronger opponent, noting that the emphasis on defensive organisation helped Ghana secure an important point.

Many fans urged the Black Stars to build on the performance and approach their final group match with confidence, as qualification to the knockout stage remains within reach.

Ghana and England remain unbeaten after the draw and are well positioned ahead of their final Group L fixtures.
