Assin Akropong (C/R), June 18, GNA – A devastating fire has gutted a 25-room house at Assin Akropong in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Regio, rendering a family and several tenants homeless.

Mrs Ama Aboagyewaa, a 54-year-old caretaker said, she was returning from Assin Fosu when she received a distress call informing her of the fire in her house.

According to her, most of the occupants, except one, were away when the fire broke out.

Although no casualties were recorded, the inferno destroyed virtually all belongings in the house, which included household appliances, mattresses, clothes and other valuables running into thousands of Ghana Cedis.

Mrs Aboagyewaa revealed that some community members were able to salvage the tenants before the fire consumed the building.

The caretaker stated that personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the emergency, but their efforts were hampered by shortage of water.

Meanwhile the Assin Fosu Municipal Fire Officer DOI Paul Tawiah told the media that investigations had commenced to ascertain cause of the fire.

He further urged residents to report fire outbreaks promptly to enable firefighters to respond quickly and prevent extensive damage.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation, led by Mr Lawrence Darkwah Monney, the Assin Fosu Municipal Director, later visited the scene to assess the extent of destruction.

Mr Monney assured the victims that a report had been forwarded to the Regional Office for the necessary support form the affected occupants of the building.
