Akatsi (VR), June 19, GNA – Mr Jonathan Dorkenoo, an Akatsi-based sports analyst and a Communication Team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged players of Ghana’s Senior national football team, the Black Stars, to give off their best and create their own history at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

He said the onus lay on the players to showcase their talent and make their mark on the global stage, just as some retired members of the national team did during their playing days.

Mr Dorkenoo made the remarks in an interaction with the Ghana News Agency in a post-match discussion following Ghana’s 1–0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L encounter.

He noted that every generation of players had a responsibility to write its own story and leave a legacy through discipline, teamwork, and commitment.

After the opening round of matches, Ghana sits second in Group L with three points and a goal difference of +1, behind England, who lead the group on goal difference after their 4–2 win over Croatia.

The current Group L standings show England and Ghana with three points each, while Panama and Croatia are yet to register a point.

Ghana’s remaining group fixtures see the Black Stars face England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27, while Panama will take on Croatia on June 23 before meeting England in their final group game on June 27.

Ghana has previously appeared at five FIFA World Cup tournaments, making its debut in Germany in 2006, where the Black Stars reached the Round of 16.

The team repeated the Round of 16 feature at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Ghana became the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals before narrowly missing out on a historic semi-final qualification.

Ghana also featured at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and returned for the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where they were eliminated in the group stage.

Mr Dorkenoo expressed optimism that with unity, discipline and determination, the current squad could build on the country’s past achievements and make another strong impression on the world stage.

He further urged supporters to continue rallying behind the team as they pursue qualification to the knockout stage.
