Accra floods expose systemic failures – Aflao Paramount Chief calls for accountability

Aflao (V/R), June 10, GNA – Togbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, has described the recent flooding in Accra as a stark reflection of systemic failures in national planning, project execution and institutional discipline.

In a press statement, Torgbui Fiti expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of families, describing the situation as a national tragedy.

He extended condolences to affected families, noting that while relief interventions were necessary, they remained temporary and could not fully compensate for the magnitude of losses suffered.

Togbui Fiti said disasters of such scale often pointed to deeper structural challenges, including delayed implementation of critical infrastructure and weak oversight in safeguarding public projects.

He cautioned that when flagship projects intended to protect vulnerable communities were undermined or poorly executed, the consequences manifested in human suffering, environmental degradation and loss of public confidence.

The Paramount Chief further raised concerns about alleged conduct by some government appointees, stating that actions driven by narrow interests could distort national development priorities and undermine the integrity of public projects.

He emphasised the need for stronger accountability, transparency and discipline in the execution of government programmes to ensure they delivered their intended benefits.

Togbui Fiti also proposed the establishment of a dedicated Ministry for Planning, Monitoring and Execution of Government Projects to enhance supervision and protect national investments from interference.

He noted that Ghana’s development required precision and adherence to approved plans, adding that public trust depended on the faithful implementation of projects.

The Chief described the Accra floods as a warning to other vulnerable communities, urging authorities to take proactive measures to prevent similar occurrences across the country.
