Accra, Sept. 10, GNA- Guinea has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, describing the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as the only viable solution to the regional dispute.
The position was reiterated during the eighth session of the Morocco-Guinea Joint Cooperation Commission held in Conakry on Tuesday.
The session was co-chaired by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita, and Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Guineans Living Abroad, Dr Morissanda Kouyaté.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Dr Kouyaté said the Republic of Guinea maintained a firm and unwavering position in support of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory.
He reiterated Guinea’s backing for the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as the sole solution to the dispute as presented by Morocco before the United Nations Security Council.
According to Dr Kouyaté, the establishment of Guinea’s Consulate General in Dakhla reflected the country’s commitment to that position and symbolised the strong ties and solidarity between the two nations.
He said the diplomatic representation in Dakhla was a concrete demonstration of Guinea’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
Mr Bourita, on his part, expressed Morocco’s appreciation for what he described as Guinea’s consistent and unconditional support on the issue.
He noted that Guinea had maintained its position in regional and international forums and underscored the significance of the opening of Guinea’s Consulate General in Dakhla in January 2020.
The two ministers reaffirmed the strong relations between their countries and highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors through the Joint Cooperation Commission.
