Zambia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity, Welcomes UN Resolution 2797

Accra, May 8, GNA-The Republic of Zambia has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces, describing the Kingdom’s autonomy initiative as the only viable path to resolving the long-standing Sahara issue.

This position was reiterated on Thursday in Rabat during bilateral talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mulambo Haimbe, who is on a working visit to the North African country.

In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, Zambia welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025. The resolution recognizes the Moroccan autonomy plan, within the framework of national sovereignty, as a serious, credible and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to the dispute over the Sahara.

Mr. Haimbe expressed his country’s strong backing for ongoing United Nations efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement of the regional issue. He underscored Zambia’s view that the Moroccan autonomy proposal remains the only realistic, pragmatic and mutually acceptable solution.

According to him, the initiative offers a constructive framework that can facilitate a lasting political settlement acceptable to all parties involved.

For his part, Mr. Bourita welcomed the steady strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Zambia in recent years.

He noted that diplomatic ties have been bolstered by the opening of the Zambian Embassy in Rabat and a Consulate General in Laayoune in October 2020.

The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation across various sectors, reflecting the growing partnership between the two nations.
