Bolgatanga, July 11, GNA – Officials of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Upper East Region participated in a clean-up exercise at the Regional Health Directorate as part of the national sanitation campaign.
The two-hour exercise saw staff, dressed in branded GHS T-shirts, use cutlasses, rakes, brooms, shovels, wheelbarrows and other tools to clean the Directorate’s premises and its surroundings.
They weeded overgrown grass, removed cobwebs, swept the compound and desilted gutters to improve environmental sanitation.
Although the Upper East Region was not among the regions selected for the Government’s special anti-flood sanitation campaign, the Regional Health Directorate encouraged all staff to participate, stressing the responsibility of healthcare professionals to promote personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness.
Ahead of the exercise, the Directorate directed all health facilities across the region to clean their premises in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to promote cleaner and healthier communities.
Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, Upper East Regional Director of the GHS, commended staff across the region for their active participation in the two-day exercise.
He said clean-up exercises formed an integral part of the Service’s activities because healthcare professionals were expected to champion personal hygiene, proper sanitation and environmental cleanliness.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr Abubakari said the clean-up campaign in the Service’s administrative offices and health facilities would continue beyond the national exercise.
“We lead by example, and so our premises are always clean. Despite that, we remain committed to keeping our premises and the surrounding environment clean,” he said.
He added: “As managers of the health service, we believe that the continuous cleaning of our environment sets a good example for residents.”
Dr Abubakari urged residents to cultivate the habit of keeping their homes and workplaces clean, stressing that environmental cleanliness was a shared responsibility.
“Cleanliness is next to godliness,” he said.
