Nkroful (W/R), July 11, GNA – Mr Joseph Armah Agyekum, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ellembelle, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for instituting the National Sanitation Day initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to improve environmental cleanliness and prevent flooding.
He said the exercise had heightened public awareness of the need to keep the environment clean to reduce the risk of natural disasters, particularly floods.
Mr Armah Agyekum said this during a two-day national post-flood clean-up exercise at Nkroful in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
The exercise, on the theme: “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods,” brought together staff of the District Assembly, market women, traders and personnel from the security agencies. The clean-up exercise commenced at 1900 hours.
The DCE described the initiative as a positive step towards addressing the sanitation challenges confronting the country and mitigating the impact of floods.
He said sustained environmental cleanliness would improve public health and enhance community resilience against sanitation-related diseases.
Mr Armah Agyekum expressed the hope that the exercise would become a monthly activity to complement the National Sanitation Day initiative.
He said the Assembly would strictly enforce its bye-laws to prevent developers from building on waterways, a major cause of perennial flooding in many communities.
Mr Armah Agyekum commended staff of the District Assembly, market women, traders and the security agencies for their massive turnout and commitment to the exercise.
