Jirapa, (UW/R), May 02, GNA – Mr Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister, has observed that economic indicators alone cannot adequately define national prosperity, stressing that development must be reflected in the lived realities of citizens.
He said true prosperity should be measured by the availability of decent jobs, the strength of local enterprises, and the security of livelihoods among workers across sectors.
“Prosperity must be felt in the homes of teachers, farmers, nurses, civil servants, traders, artisans, security personnel and our unemployed youth seeking opportunity,” he said.
Mr Puozuing made the remarks at the 2026 May Day celebration held in Jirapa, under the theme: “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Microeconomic Stability.”
The celebration was characterised by processions of members of various labour unions with placards expressing diverse concerns about the current state of the economy and the needs of workers.
He commended Ghanaian workers for their resilience, patriotism, and contribution to national development.
The Minister explained that the government’s development approach was anchored on inclusive growth, with emphasis on job creation and sustainable livelihoods rather than macroeconomic stability alone.
Mr Puozuing said sustainable livelihoods could not be achieved solely through central government interventions, but also required grassroots-driven development supported by effective local governance and citizen participation.
He outlined key regional interventions including the promotion of agribusiness and agricultural modernisation, strengthening local industries, enhancing technical and vocational skills, supporting small businesses, and expanding infrastructure for commerce and investment.
The Minister acknowledged concerns of workers regarding wages, conditions of service and welfare, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to engaging organised labour through dialogue, while promoting fairness and transparency.
He mentioned ongoing public sector reforms by the government, including plans to establish an independent emoluments commission to ensure equity and sustainability in remuneration.
On youth unemployment, Mr Puozuing said the government was implementing targeted programmes such as afforestation initiatives, apprenticeship and innovation schemes, and technical and vocational education to equip young people with employable skills.
He called for collaboration between government, labour, private sector and traditional authorities to drive inclusive development, urging stakeholders to prioritise national interest and unity.
Naa Dinaa Donglabong Ganaa III, the Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area, observed that the theme for the celebration underscored the need to prioritise people-centered development to yield meaningful progress.
He urged stakeholders to support local enterprises, empower the youth and uphold the dignity of labour.
The revered chief called for unity among labour, leadership and communities, emphasising that collective action was essential for achieving sustainable development.
