Accra, May 11, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama in fulfillment of his election 2024 campaign promise has signed the Legal Education Bill into Law to expand Legal Education.

The Act seeks to establish the Council for Legal Education and Training to regulate professional legal education in Ghana and provide the curriculum and standards for legal education.

The Act would also break the monopoly of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) over professional legal education.

In addition, the President assent to two new Bills – Governance Advisory Council Bill and Value for Money Office Bill.

The Governance Advisory Council Act would ensure the establishment of an independent body to promote accountability and to strengthen the fight against corruption.

The Value for Money Office Act aims to address persistent challenges including inflated contracts, abandoned projects, cost overruns, and wasteful public expenditure.

President Mahama said the Legal Education Act would regulate legal education and ensure the highest standards in terms of legal education.

He noted that it would also open the space for more opportunities for legal education in Ghana.

He said sourced contracts would go to the Value for Money Office whilst all contracts above a certain value would go to the Value for Money Office.

This, the President said was to ensure that Ghana was getting value for every cedi that they spend.
