Dambai (O/R), May 11, GNA-The Oti Regional House of Chiefs has condemned recent killings in the Nkwanta South Municipality and announced plans to investigate the conflict to establish the facts for onward submission to the National House of Chiefs.
The decision was taken during a general meeting held on May 6, 2026, in Dambai under the leadership of Nana Soglo Allot IV, President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Likpe Traditional Area.
A statement dated May 7, 2026, copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and signed by the Registrar of the House, Mr Divine Mawuse Kpeli, said the meeting focused on the security situation in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
The statement noted that members of the House expressed sympathy to families who lost relatives in the recent disturbances and strongly condemned the killings.
As part of the resolutions adopted, the House unanimously agreed to invite all parties involved in the conflict for a fact-finding engagement.
The findings, according to the statement, would subsequently be forwarded to the National House of Chiefs for the necessary action.
The House also appealed to residents within and outside the region, particularly members of the Adele, Akyode, Challa and Muslim communities to refrain from violence and embrace dialogue and peaceful means in resolving disputes.
“Nananom caution all citizens within and outside the municipality, especially members of the Adele, Akyode, Challa and Muslim communities to desist from violent ways of resolving issues and instead use peaceful means for amicable settlement in the Nkwanta South Municipality,” the statement added.
The statement further indicated that Nana Mprah Besemuna III, former President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs, attributed the tensions in Nkwanta South partly to chieftaincy disputes, which he said had destabilised peace in the area.
According to portions of the statement sighted by the GNA, Nana Besemuna III explained that various factions involved in the conflict were seeking recognition of their respective paramountcies while also claiming legitimate ownership of the Nkwanta township.
He stressed the need for the Regional House of Chiefs to take decisive steps to address the chieftaincy disputes and restore peace in the municipality.
Nana Besemuna III expressed confidence that with proper handling of the disputes, lasting peace and stability could be achieved in the area.
