Sunyani, (Bono), May 29, GNA – Nana Alhaji Alhassan Abdulai Mayanka, a Muslim leader, has called for collective efforts to stem illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey around the Tano River course in Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.
He said the galamsey activities deprived the community members of clean water.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Alhaji Mayanka, also the Tubahene (sub-chief) in the Bono Region, called on the Bono Regional Security Council to strengthen their efforts to tackle the menace, restore and preserve the Tano River.
He said if immediate measures were not taken, the Tano River, which remained the major source of drinking water in parts of the region would be destroyed and thereby lead to water shortage.
Alhaji Mayanka said: “Not all of us can drill a mechanized borehole in our homes, and we shouldn’t allow selfish individuals to put the life of the entire population in jeopardy.”
He said the surest way to fight the growing galamsey activities in the country was law enforcement and called on the government to prosecute offenders to serve as deterrent to like-minded others who were bent on destroying the environment with their unscrupulous galamsey activities.
Alhaji Mayanka also advised the Zongo communities to ensure proper environmental cleanliness as they observed the Eid-ul-Adha, urging the Muslim youth to celebrate the season in moderation.
