Police investigate attempted murder, unlawful damage

Accra, May 29, GNA – The Akatsi District Police Command has commenced investigations into a disturbance that resulted in a shooting incident, leaving two persons injured. 

The incident also led to the destruction of property at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Volta Region, on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.  

A press release issued by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, Head of Public Affairs, Volta Region, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Friday said the victims; James Kpanda, 44, and Jonathan Kpanda, 30, sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.  

“Additionally, a Mercedes -Benz private car, two motorbikes, and a fence wall were destroyed,” it said. 

 “Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 1030 hours, on the said date, some young men, including the two victims, allegedly went to the residence of the suspect, Mensah Awagah and started pulling down his fence wall.”   

“Their actions reportedly infuriated the suspect, who allegedly went into his room, retrieved a gun and fired at the group, resulting in gunshot injuries to James and Jonathan at the knee and the eye ,respectively”.  

The release said angry youth in the area subsequently went on rampage and set ablaze a Mercedes -Benz private car and two motorbikes parked within the suspect’s compound.  

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene for assistance but before their arrival, the car and the motorbikes had been burnt beyond repairs, it said.  

“Suspect Awagah is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations, whilst the injured victims are receiving treatment at the Akatsi District Hospital.”  

The police were on a manhunt for the other suspects involved to assist ongoing investigations and further developments would be communicated in due course, the release added.
