Casablanca, May 06, GNA – The Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Morocco has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AstraZeneca to strengthen the country’s health system, advance scientific research, and accelerate digital innovation in healthcare.
The agreement, signed in Casablanca and presided over by Amine Tehraoui, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, establishes a comprehensive framework for cooperation to support national public health priorities and enhance clinical research.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the inaugural GITEX Future Health Africa Morocco 2026, a major gathering of global health and technology stakeholders.
Under the agreement, the two parties will intensify collaboration in key areas, including early detection and screening of chronic diseases, development of innovative AI-powered digital health solutions, and the use of real-world data to improve decision-making and guide medical research.
The partnership will also focus on strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals through continuous training in digital technologies, innovation, and research.
As part of the initiative, the Ministry and AstraZeneca will explore the expansion of the “Africa Heart Health” programme, aimed at improving the management of cardiovascular and renal diseases through innovative care models supported by digital tools and field research.
The agreement also places strong emphasis on health sovereignty, data protection, and adherence to ethical standards in scientific research, ensuring long-term benefits for public health in Morocco.
Mr Tehraoui said the agreement aligned with Morocco’s broader efforts to transform its healthcare system under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, particularly within the framework of universal health coverage and the expansion of social protection.
He noted that the reform agenda was anchored on strengthening infrastructure, investing in human capital, accelerating digital transformation through data and artificial intelligence, and building strategic international partnerships to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare.
For his part, Rami Scandar, President of AstraZeneca for the Middle East and North Africa region, reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to Morocco, highlighting its support for initiatives driven by scientific innovation and advanced technologies.
He said the partnership would contribute to strengthening the sustainability of Morocco’s healthcare system and expanding access to innovative treatments.
