Accra, May 1, GNA –The Ghana News Agency division of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), have appealed to government to release all outstanding compensations owed to workers to help cushion their meagre salaries.
The call was made by Mrs Lydia Kukua Asamoah, Chairperson of the PSWU–GNA Division, when staff of the Agency gathered to commemorate this year’s May Day celebration in Accra.
Mrs Asamoah explained that government owed the workers of the Agency, nine months of outstanding compensations covering the fourth quarters of 2024 and 2025, as well as the first quarter of 2026, and appealed for urgent payment of such arrears, stressing that “the worker deserves his or her wages.”
She urged the government to continue investing in the Agency to strengthen its role as the nation’s trusted source of authentic information and a bulwark against misinformation.
This year’s May Day celebration, observed globally, was held on the theme: “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond the Macroeconomic Stability.”
Mrs Asamoah said although government’s reports of macroeconomic stability were welcome, workers expected such gains to translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives, including enhanced purchasing power, decent living standards and restored dignity.
She announced that the PSWU of TUC had successfully negotiated a 15 per cent Institutional-Based Allowance for member organisations without existing allowances, adding that documentation processes were currently underway for beneficiaries to start benefiting from it effective April 2026.
She noted that the Union had introduced active loan packages for its members, as well as Critical Illness Fund, and was working towards the establishment of a Mutual Health Insurance Scheme for members, urging staff to commit towards activities of the Union and also to recommit to hard work and professionalism.
She commended the management of GNA for maintaining a cordial working relationship with the Union, and staff.
As part of activities marking the May Day celebration, the PSWU–GNA Division had initiated aerobic exercise sessions to promote workers’ health, she said, adding that the activity would soon be institutionalised at the GNA Head Office to enhance staff wellness.
Mrs Asamoah also acknowledged the contributions of past union leaders for their mentorship, commended current executives for their dedication, and encouraged non-unionised staff to join the PSWU to help build a stronger collective front in GNA.
She urged workers to remain united, resilient and committed to national development, while honouring the sacrifices of labour pioneers whose struggles secured dignity and rights for workers.
