Galamsey: Bono GNFS procures water for fire suppression due to wanton destruction of Tano River

Sunyani, (Bono), May 8, GNA – The Bono Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service says the service has to procure water from other sources to respond to fire outbreaks, a reliable source at the command has said.

The source told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani on condition of anonymity that the command could not rely anymore on the Tano River at the Abesim Head Works of the Ghana Water Limited due to the magnitude of the level of pollution.

According to the source, the Tano River had been badly affected by activities of illegal miners around the river course, urging immediate and decisive measures to preserve the water’s body.

“The level of pollution in the river is too much, and the service can’t rely on and use the water any longer. So, the only option for us now is to buy water to suppress fire and that is too expensive, draining our coffers”, the source stated.

During a visit, the GNA noticed wanton pollution and destruction of the river which also served as the major source of drinking water in the area and the situation was appalling that the river has turned ‘brownish’ in colour.

Some workers sighted at the Headworks declined to comment, however one of them said: “It’s expensive to treat the water due to the level of pollution”.
