French media: Woman dies of heatstroke after sporting event in Lyon

Brussels, May 25, (dpa/GNA) – French media outlets have reported that a woman has died of heatstroke, following a sporting event in Lyon. 

She was reportedly taken to hospital on Sunday after previously taking part in a demanding fitness run in France’s third-largest city. According to the regional newspaper Le Progrès, the woman was 28 years old.

A heatwave has been gripping France and other European countries since the Whitsun weekend, with temperatures in Lyon reaching around 30 degrees Celcius. 

In the capital Paris, which is also affected by high temperatures, a 53-year-old man reportedly died of a heart attack on Sunday whilst running. 

France’s Sports Minister Marina Ferrari, pointed out that physical activity in extreme heat requires the utmost vigilance.
