Energy Minister inspects ongoing projects in Ashanti Region

Kumasi, May 11, GNA – Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has inspected some ongoing projects in the Ashanti Region being undertaken to boost quality and safe power supply in Kumasi.

These projects are interventions being undertaken by the Energy Ministry and the Electricity Company of Ghana to stabilise power supply in the region, especially Kumasi, as power demand continue to surge in the ‘garden city.”

He was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited, the CEO of GRIDCo, journalists and other dignitaries.

Together with his entourage, Dr Jinapor visited the Aska and Cenit Plants at Anwomaso, the Boadi to Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply sub-transmission lines, the Kumasi Substation of GRIDCo and the Ridge BSP.

The team observed that the Aska plant, currently generating about 130 megawatt (MW) of power, is undergoing its second phase of system upgrade.

Additionally, the CENIT Plant, a new generator plant, is still under construction to produce 110MW of power after its completion to boost power supply in the region.

It is one of the projects under the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and is expected to be completed by May/June, 2026.

Furthermore, they noted that ECG had procured and installed a new 30/39 MegaVolt-Ampere (MVA) transformer at the Ridge Substation in Kumasi to replace the old 20/26 MVA transformer.

This is to increase the capacity load of the substation to meet the growing demand of quality power in the city.

As part of efforts to improve power supply in the region, the old transformer at the Ridge Substation was not discarded, but relocated to Offinso to be installed to serve that enclave.

Dr Jinapor said the government was intentional about stabilising quality and safe power supply in the country, particularly in Kumasi, the “heartbeat” of economic activities in the region.

To complement the major system upgrades in the region, ECG is currently installing about 300 transformers in communities.

Dr Jinapor said additional 400 transformers would be installed as the second phase of the transformer installation project in the region.

He disclosed that in July, GRIDCo would embark on a major upgrade of its transmission lines to ensure an improvement in system reliability in the country.

The Minister also revealed that ECG was also working to improve power supply in the Volta region.

According to him, a transmission line would be constructed from Asiekpe to Ho so that that part of the country would have a dedicated feeder to boost the capacity of all the other towns on the Eastern Corridor.

Also, about 18 transformers would be installed in the Mpoho areas of the Western region by next week to improve the power supply there as well.

Dr Jinapor appealed to the public to bear with the Energy Sector as the country was undergoing major system upgrades to stabilise power supply in the country.

“Occasionally we may have to switch some plants off or some gadgets off in order to enable the men on the field to work,” he explained.

He said the Energy Ministry was hopeful that by the end of the third quarter of 2026, the country would experience a very resilient stable power supply.

Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, thanked the Energy Ministry for the hard work and dedication towards improving quality power supply in the region.
