Akatsi (V/R), May 29, GNA – The Akatsi District Police Command has begun investigations into a disturbance that resulted in a shooting incident at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Volta Region, leaving two persons injured and several properties destroyed.

A press release signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Regional Police Command, said the incident occurred on Wednesday, May 27.

The victims, identified as James Kpanda, 44, and Jonathan Kpanda, 30, sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

The release said a private Mercedes-Benz car, two motorbikes and a fence wall were also destroyed during the disturbance.

Preliminary investigations indicated that at about 1030 hours on the day of the incident, some young men, including the two victims, allegedly went to the residence of the suspect, Mensah Awagah, and began pulling down his fence wall.

The action reportedly provoked the suspect, who allegedly retrieved a gun from his room and fired at the group.

James Kpanda sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, while Jonathan Kpanda suffered a gunshot injury to the eye.

The release stated that the angry youth subsequently went on a rampage and set ablaze a private Mercedes-Benz  car and two motorbikes parked within the suspect’s residence.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene, but the car and motorbikes had already been burnt beyond recognition before their arrival.

Police said suspect Mensah Awagah was currently in custody assisting with investigations, while the injured victims were receiving treatment at the Akatsi District Hospital.

The Police added that a manhunt had been launched for other suspects connected to the incident to assist with ongoing investigations.

The Command assured the public that further developments on the case would be communicated in due course.
