Accra, May 13, GNA – This year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) begins today (Wednesday) across the country with the English Language Oral Paper.
The practical component of the examination commenced last month, April 7, while the entire examination is expected to end on June 19, 2026.
A total of 509,862 candidates, comprising 225,274 boys and 284,588 girls from 1,020 schools, are expected to sit for the examination nationwide.
The figure represents an increase of 48,126 candidates, equivalent to a 10.4 per cent rise over last year’s candidature of 461,736.
Each candidate will take an average of seven subjects, comprising four core subjects and a minimum of three elective subjects.
The examination will be conducted at 1,017 centres across the country.
Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, the Director-General, Ghana Education Service (GES), briefing the media in Accra on Tuesday, said the Service was working closely with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the examination.
He said all materials and relevant logistics required for the successful conduct of the examination had been put in place.
Prof Davis noted that WAEC and the GES were collaborating with the security agencies to maintain law and order at the various examination centres.
He advised candidates to refrain from examination malpractice, stressing that results obtained through cheating did not reflect the true academic capabilities of students.
The Director-General also urged supervisors and invigilators to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, warning that anyone found aiding any form of examination malpractice would face severe sanctions.
“We have reminded heads of schools that are consistently cited for examination malpractice to change the narrative this year or risk being replaced.
“If you cannot change the situation, then the situation will change you,” he said.
