10 kidnapped, house burned in central Nigeria attack

ABUJA, May 25 (Xinhua/GNA) — Nigerian police said on Monday, that an investigation and rescue operation had been launched after 10 people were abducted by gunmen in Nigeria’s central state of Kwara, who also set fire to the home of a community leader.

Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, spokesperson for the Kwara State police Command, told Xinhua that the victims included wives and children of Umar Seriki, head of the Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area.

According to Ejire-Adeyemi, the attackers set part of the community leader’s residence on fire during the assault, before fleeing with the victims to an unknown location.

She said a separate attack on the Yashikira divisional police headquarters was repelled by security forces, describing it as a coordinated operation.

The motive for the attacks remains unclear. Police authorities have launched a full-scale tactical operation to rescue the abducted victims and track down the attackers.
