Accra, April 28, GNA — Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has distributed close to 3,000 pairs of locally produced sandals to Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates across the constituency to ensure comfort during their upcoming exams.
Speaking at the presentation, Mr Shaib, also the Second Deputy Minority Whip, said the initiative, dubbed: “Backing Stock,” was developed with constituency executives to shift the type of support offered to candidates.
“We started before December last year, collecting shoe sizes from schools with the help of teachers, before engaging a local producer,” he explained.
“This is to encourage them and let them know we cherish their hard work as they prepare to qualify for SHS and beyond,” he added.
Mr Shaib announced that the sandal donation was only the first phase.
According to him, there was a newly launched “MP’s Freshers’ Fund,” and under it, successful candidates will also receive trunks, mattresses, school bags, and financial support to ease the burden on parents and guardians as students transition to senior high school.
“We are doing all of this to support families so that the burden normally brought to bear on parents will be reduced,” he added.
The 2026 BECE is scheduled to take place from Monday, May 4, to Monday, May 11, 2026.
Over about 600,000 candidates are expected to participate in this final assessment for Junior High School (JHS) students, which will be administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for both school and private candidates.
