Kadjebi (O/R), April 25, GNA – A rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has ripped off the roof of a car garage at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School (KASEC) in the Oti Region, leaving vehicles and other school property exposed to the weather.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, April 23, and caused extensive damage to the structure, with roofing sheets torn off and scattered across the surrounding area.
No casualties were recorded.
Mr Emmanuel Cole, Headmaster of Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a visit to the scene, said the situation could have been far worse if the incident had occurred during the day.
“We were fortunate that it happened at night when the area was not busy; otherwise, it could have been disastrous,” he said.
Mr Cole further noted that an electricity outage at the time of the storm helped avert a possible fire outbreak.
According to him, strong winds caused electrical wires from a nearby pole to fall, posing a serious safety risk.
“If there had been power at the time, the fallen wires could have sparked a fire. We are grateful that nothing of that sort happened,” he added.
He expressed relief that no lives were lost and no injuries recorded, despite the extent of the damage.
School authorities are yet to provide an official estimate of the cost of the damage, but preliminary assessments indicate that significant repairs would be required to restore the facility and safeguard school property from further exposure to adverse weather conditions.
Residents and other stakeholders have called for urgent support to rehabilitate the damaged structure.
The incident adds to growing concerns about the impact of extreme weather events on public infrastructure in the region.
