Binaba (U/E), Aug. 29, GNA – Mr Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Zebilla Constituency, has commissioned the first phase of renovation works at the Binaba Health Centre in the Bawku West District.
The health centre, established in 1951, was previously in a deplorable condition, characterized by broken louvre blades, torn window nets, damaged doors, cracks in walls and other structural defects.
The first phase of the renovation, which included work on the wards and consulting rooms, was funded from the MP’s share of the Health Fund.
Speaking at a ceremony to commission the completed works, Mr Ndebilla said GH¢100,000 had been allocated annually from his share of the fund to improve infrastructure at the facility.
He said videos, which circulated on social media highlighted the deplorable state of the facility and the difficulties residents faced in accessing basic healthcare services.
“That informed us to bring some relief to our people,” he said.
Mr Ndebilla said although GH¢100,000 had initially been committed to the renovation, approximately GH¢200,000 was eventually spent to refurbish the facility.
“I am very glad that today, everybody can testify that the project committee and management of the District Health Directorate have done a very good job in the transformation of the facility,” he said.
He said the second phase of the project would involve the construction of a doctor’s bungalow to provide accommodation for the medical officer at the facility.
“We will construct a befitting bungalow for the doctor to stay and take care of the health needs of residents,” he said.
The MP also assured the doctor at the facility of his commitment to improving his work and living conditions, “We will do everything possible to make sure you are comfortable and happy, so that you can help take care of us here,” he said.
Mr Ndebilla said the completion of the renovation works would help ease pressure and congestion at the Zebilla Hospital, particularly as a result of the insecurity situation in Bawku.
He added that plans were also underway to renovate the Sapeliga Health Centre to improve access to healthcare for residents in that area and further reduce pressure on the district hospital.
The MP appealed to benevolent individuals, groups, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other development partners to support efforts to improve healthcare delivery and living conditions in the constituency.
“Do not leave these works to only the MP. If there are individuals, groups, NGOs and other partners in health who can support us, they should come and help uplift the health status of Binaba,” he said.
Mr Stephen Bordotsiah, the Bawku West District Director of Health Services, thanked the MP for the intervention and described the Binaba Health Centre as strategically positioned.
He said the facility served approximately 18 per cent of the district’s total population.
