Pakistan army chief in Tehran amid Iran crisis diplomacy

Tehran, April 15, (dpa/GNA) – Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has arrived in Tehran for talks, as part of ongoing crisis diplomacy aimed at resolving the war in Iran.

Munir is seen as one of the most influential intermediaries between the United States and Iran.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, citing informed sources, reported on Wednesday that Munir is expected to deliver a message from Washington. The message is said to be linked to a possible second round of negotiations in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, as well as an extension of the current ceasefire.

A previous round of talks held in Islamabad ended on Sunday without a breakthrough. The ceasefire, which came into effect on April 8, is due to expire next Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump had earlier signalled the possibility of a second round of negotiations.

“Something could happen in the next two days,” he told the The New York Post by phone, without providing further details.
