Akatsi (VR), Aug. 19, GNA – Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akatsi South Constiteuncy, has presented GHS15,000 to the organisers of the 55th Annual Volta Region Basic School Sports Festival to support the hosting of the competition in Akatsi South.
The donation was aimed at supporting the organisation of the week-long regional sports festival, which is being hosted at the Akatsi Senior High Technical School from Saturday, August 15, to Friday, August 21, 2026.
Mr Ahiafor, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, disclosed to the GNA that the financial support would complement the efforts of the organisers and other stakeholders towards ensuring a successful festival and providing the necessary support for participating teams.
The festival, under the auspices of the Volta Region Basic Schools Sports Federation, brings together basic school athletes from Districts across the Volta Region to compete and showcase their sporting talents.
The participating young athletes are currently competing in six disciplines, namely soccer, volleyball, handball, netball, athletics and table tennis.
The event would further provide a platform for pupils to develop their sporting abilities, foster healthy competition and promote discipline and teamwork among basic schoolchildren in the region.
The festival, being hosted under the Olympic motto, “Citius, Altius, Fortius” – Faster, Higher, Stronger, has attracted participation from various districts, with Akatsi South serving as the host municipality.
The event is also expected to contribute to the identification and nurturing of promising young sporting talents who could progress to represent the region and the country in future competitions.
The presentation by Mr Ahiafor, which included two sets of jerseys and two sets of football hoses to team Akatsi, formed part of his support for youth development and sports in the Akatsi South Constituency.
