Dambai (O/R), April 10, GNA-Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Oti Regional Minister, has assured public sector workers in the Nkwanta South Municipality of their safety following the renewed tribal disturbances that have unsettled the area.
According to the Minister, government had intensified security measures to restore calm and protect lives and property, urging workers who fled the municipality at the height of the violence to return to their posts.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Gyapong indicated that the situation although tense, is gradually improving as security personnel maintaining a strong presence in the affected communities.
The disturbances, which escalated in late March left several people dead and properties destroyed, forcing many residents and public sector workers to seek safety elsewhere.
The situation reached a peak on March 25, 2026, widely described by locals as “Black Wednesday,” when multiple fatal attacks were recorded.
Mr Gyapong stressed that the government was committed to ensuring lasting peace in Nkwanta, noting that the area remains critical to the development of the Oti Region.
“We are putting in place the necessary measures to guarantee the safety of all workers and residents. I want to assure those who have left that it is safe to return and continue their duties,” he stated.
He disclosed that authorities were engaging traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and security agencies to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent future occurrences.
He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and strictly observe the curfew imposed on the municipality, which runs from 2200 hours to 0500 hours.
The Regional Minister expressed optimism that with sustained security interventions and community cooperation, peace and stability will soon be fully restored in Nkwanta South.
