Ho (V/R), April 10, GNA-Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister has reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting grassroots sports development through strategic partnerships and infrastructure investment.
The assurance was given when he hosted members of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) at a breakfast meeting in Ho ahead of the Association’s eighth anniversary celebration.
At the engagement, held on Thursday April 9, 2026, at the NAGRAT premises, brought together seasoned professionals, including Veteran sports journalist Kwabena Yeboah, sports writers, presenters, lecturers, students and key stakeholders to deliberate on sports development in the region.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Gunu underscored the critical role of sports in national development, youth empowerment, and social cohesion.
“Sports play a vital role in shaping our national narrative, inspiring young people and promoting unity across communities,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of sports journalism in projecting opportunities within the sports industry and encouraging youth participation.
“Sports journalism remains a powerful tool in showcasing talents, creating awareness and driving interest in the sector,” he added.
Mr Gunu outlined the government’s immediate plans to strengthen sports development, including the establishment of a multipurpose sports facility for schools and grassroots activities.
He further disclosed plans to develop a FIFA Category Two standard stadium and create a dedicated secretariat to support talent identification and nurturing across the region.
The Minister also mentioned initiatives such as the Minister’s Cup, which aims at discovering and supporting young talents at the community level.
As part of the anniversary celebration, Mr Gunu joined participants at the SWAG Volta public lecture held under the theme “Eight Years of SWAG: The Impact and Development in Sports Journalism.”
At the event, he commended the Volta/Oti Chapter of SWAG for its dedication to promoting professionalism in sports journalism and giving visibility to athletes and sporting disciplines.
“Your contribution over the past eight years has been remarkable in shaping sports discourse and projecting talents within the region,” he noted.
As a show of support, Mr Gunu made a cash donation to assist the Association in implementing its programmes and initiatives.
In recognition of his commitment to sports development, SWAG Volta/Oti conferred on the Minister the role of Chief Patron, describing the appointment as a step towards strengthening collaboration.
The anniversary activities formed part of broader efforts by SWAG Volta/Oti to engage stakeholders, promote sports journalism and drive sustainable sports development in the Volta Region.
