Accra, April 14, GNA – Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, has announced the commencement of a nationwide electricity transformer replacement programme.
Dr. Jinapor explained that the initiative is part of government’s reset agenda to address ageing, obsolete, and overloaded transformers that have contributed to frequent outages and interruptions in power supply.
He said this during a supervisory inspection at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Substation at Nmai Dzorn in Accra.
The programme, which began in Accra, will extend to other regions in the coming months.
The ECG plans to roll out about 2,000 new distribution transformers across the country.
The Energy Minister revealed that some of the transformers in use were over 22 years old, underscoring the urgency of the exercise.
“We are determined to ensure that all pockets of outages and overloads are dealt with. ECG under the current management is focusing on its core mandate by investing in critical infrastructure,” he stated.
He assured consumers that the frequent power interruptions were momentary and necessary for long-term reliability.
He also noted that the upgrade will not directly result in increased tariffs, noting that improved supply consistency will generate more revenue for ECG without burdening consumers.
Dr. Jinapor commended ECG’s management for measurable improvements in emergency response and accountability, highlighting the introduction of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and monitoring systems to track outages and response times.

He also reaffirmed government’s commitment to consult widely on ongoing discussions about private sector participation in ECG operations.
“This exercise is a massive investment in Ghana’s energy future. With the support of the President and the Finance Minister, we are confident that this programme will deliver a more reliable and efficient electricity supply for all.” Dr. Jinapor said.
