Association of China-Ghana Mining sustains support for convalescing GNA journalist

Accra, April 15, GNA – The Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM) has donated another GHS20,000 towards the medical treatment of Ms Rosemary Wayo , a Chief Reporter with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), who survived a tragic road accident in 2024.

The donation follows an appeal from the Agency to the Association to assist the award-winning reporter to undergo specialised treatment.

Ms Wayo’s life changed on September 21, 2024, when she was involved in a motor accident near Suhum in the Eastern Region.

The accident occurred a week after she won the Ghana Journalists Association’s Northern Regional awards for Best Reporter in Road Safety; and Peace and Conflict Sensitive Reporting.

She was travelling from Tamale to Accra for a professional training programme when the bus she boarded and fuel tanker collided. The crash claimed eight lives on the spot and left Ms Wayo critically injured.

Ms Wayo spent a week unconscious in hospital and later underwent spine surgery at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.

She is currently recovering from lower body paralysis, relying on physiotherapy and medications, while enduring constant severe pain.

Mr Vincent Sun, Deputy Secretary General of the Association, who made the presentation on behalf of its Chairman, conveyed their empathy to Ms Wayo.

He said the Association’s goal was to support young individuals who deployed their talents for the common good of society by helping them to reach their full potential.

This would enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.

He assured that through its corporate social responsibility, ACGM would, therefore continue to support Ms Wayo’s recovery to enable her to resume her vibrant and productive life.

Mr Sun said the Association would also continue to support the development of their local communities, while deploying the latest modern technologies and environmentally sustainable practices in their operations.

The first donation was made in September last year.

Mrs Beatrice Asamani Savage, Director of Editorial of the GNA, received the donation on behalf of Ms Wayo.

She expressed gratitude to the Association, describing Ms Wayo a “model journalist for her diligence and dedication to telling the stories of the less privileged in society.”

She said the support was a great relief to both Ms Wayo and the GNA, explaining that her income was woefully inadequate to support her medical expenses.

The support shown would also encourage her colleagues with the assurance that they would not be abandoned in times of affliction.

Subsequently, Ms Wayo, with her mother, received the funds and expressed profound gratitude to the Association to making good their promise.

She said she did not anticipate such a long road to recovery, but was hopeful that she would make a full recovery in order to become self reliant soon.

The ACGM brings together major Chinese mining companies and mining services companies in Ghana.

It was inaugurated in April 2025 to promote responsible mining, enhance industry cooperation and support investment.

The Association has committed to driving joint projects, integrating advanced technologies and promoting green mining practices.

Its aim is to balance economic growth, ecological protection and social equity for mutual prosperity of stakeholders.
