Tema, March 05, GNA – Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has said that the continuous increment of population places pressure on the provision of adequate social amenities for all the communities within the municipality.
Mr Morton explained that in 2021 and 2022, the population of Kpone-Katamanso stood at over 417,000; however, current figures show an increment to 477,000-plus, which continued to stretch existing infrastructure and made it difficult for the assembly to provide amenities at the pace residents expected.
He made this known during a town hall meeting at Gbestile held for five electoral areas, including Kakasunanka, Nmlitsakpo, Sebrepor, Bethlehem, and Gbetsile, saying that as the population increased, the demand for schools, health facilities, roads, water, and other services also increased, and that made it challenging to meet all needs at once.
The MCE noted that the assembly was taking steps to address the situation through administrative restructuring and disclosed that there were plans to elevate the municipality to a metropolitan assembly status.
According to him, this move would allow for the creation of additional sub-metros to further decentralise administrative functions and help bring governance closer to the people and improve service delivery.
The MCE added that the assembly was counting on the Constitutional Review Committee and Parliament to approve the necessary Legislative Instrument (LI) to transition the municipality into a metropolis to enable expansion of authority and resources.
He appealed to residents to exercise patience as the assembly worked to address developmental challenges, particularly in areas such as road construction, drainage systems, and access to basic services.
Some residents who spoke during the engagement reiterated their concerns, citing inadequate infrastructure and delays in ongoing projects.
