Accra, March 26, GNA – The Local Companies in Mining Services (LOCOMS), representing indigenous contractors and service providers within the Bogoso-Prestea mining enclave, has expressed its support for Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL) as the current operator of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine.
A news statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said, LOCOMS urged stakeholders, including host communities and government authorities, to maintain a stable operating environment for HGL, highlighting the company’s progress in revitalising the mine following a period of inactivity.
LOCOMS dismissed claims that HGL had failed to meet expectations, noting that the mine is in a rebuilding phase and that the operator has shown commitment, direction, and tangible results in a short period.
“Our position is informed by experience under previous operators, where local contractors faced challenges such as prolonged non-payment, limited local participation, and operational instability,” the statement said.
The association praised HGL’s efforts to engage local contractors, including partial payments towards outstanding debts and the implementation of structured and transparent payment arrangements.
LOCOMS noted that these measures have fostered confidence among local businesses and communities.
Members of LOCOMS have contributed directly and indirectly to job creation in the host communities.
The association warned that any disruption to the current operations could jeopardize employment opportunities and negatively impact the local economy, which heavily relies on mining-related services.
LOCOMS expressed confidence in HGL’s leadership, stating that the company had credible plans to redevelop the mine sustainably.
However, the association emphasised that success required time, financial stability, and cooperative engagement from all stakeholders.
“We respectfully call on host communities, government, and the public to support the company’s efforts and prioritise constructive engagement over actions that may undermine long-term benefits,” the statement added.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to HGL and urging collaborative efforts to ensure that the Bogoso-Prestea Mine continues to serve as a driver of employment, economic growth, and sustainable development.
