Accra, March 01, GNA – Ghanaians have been encouraged to enroll onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in order to receive free healthcare when needed most.

At a ceremony to enroll residents of Goten Electoral Area in Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra, onto the NHIS, Mr Obed Nyarko, the Assembly man for the area, said the scheme was accessible to everyone.

Speaking in an interview at the community gathering, Mr Nyarko explained that the Scheme was designed to ensure that no registered individual was denied healthcare due to financial challenges.

According to him, the scheme covered hospital bed charges and basic medications, significantly reducing out-of-pocket expenses for patients and their families.

He noted that the registration process was straightforward and required basic personal details, including name, date of birth, phone number and sex.

Although the standard registration fee is GH¢20 per person, he indicated that registration was currently free and urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity.

The Assembly Member emphasized that the NHIS promoted regular health check-ups and helped curb self-medication, which remained a concern in many communities.

He added that strict monitoring systems had been introduced to prevent fraud and abuse, including a dedicated unit responsible for compliance and oversight.

Mr Nyarko expressed optimism that increased enrollment would improve health outcomes and strengthen overall community well-being.

The renewed push for NHIS enrollment is expected to enhance healthcare accessibility within the area and reduce the financial burden on households.

According to the National Health Insurance Authority, the number of active cardholders currently stands at 21 million.
