Chief Imam declares Friday Eid‑ul‑Fitr

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, March 20, GNA – The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, has declared Friday, March 20, as Eid‑ul‑Fitr, marking the end of the Ramadan fast.

The declaration followed the sighting of the new crescent moon in Wenchi, Bono Region, and other parts of the country on Thursday evening.

In a message to the Muslim community, Sheikh Sharubutu emphasised the spiritual significance of the occasion as a route to renew commitment in Allah.

He urged Muslims to remain steadfast in the virtues of discipline and self‑sacrifice cultivated during the holy month.

Families will commence the celebration with the distribution of Zakat‑ul‑Fitr to the needy, a mandatory act of charity to ensure all members of the community can celebrate.

The day typically begins with congregational Eid prayers at various prayer grounds, where worshippers, dressed in vibrant new robes and traditional smocks, gather to offer thanks to Allah.

Celebrations are characterised by the preparation of traditional delicacies such as rice with stew, Waakye and assorted meat dishes, shared with neighbours and friends of all faiths.

Cultural displays are also expected on the streets of Accra and other communities.

Eid‑ul‑Fitr dates back to the time of Prophet Muhammad and his companions after their victory at the Battle of Badr.

It was established as a day of gratitude to Allah for the strength and endurance to observe the fast of Ramadan.

The festival traditionally begins with the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, signalling the completion of the spiritual journey of self‑reflection and restraint.
